Tom Peck (Blitz, Inc) on Controlling Your Thoughts to Achieve Success
How a person thinks will ultimately control their destiny. Ghandi said it best in the following quote, “Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” Controlling your thoughts will ultimately control your emotions. Controlling your emotions will ultimately lead to making wiser decisions. Wiser decisions will ultimately lead to greater results. Tom Peck Blitz Inc CEO states that humans are the only living thing on the planet that has this control...the idea of self. We can control our thoughts - and ultimately our destiny.
Furthermore, Tom Peck believes that your attitude affect those around you more than you may think. If a person can be persuaded to do something just because a lot of other people are doing it, that same person can also be persuaded inadvertantly by others not doing something. Blitz Inc Reviews 'Standards'
Having standards in your organization may seem like a very simple concept. However, you won't believe how many organizations and companies out there either don't have them, or don't stand by them. There needs to be a very standard set of expectations that everyone should follow. If not, identifying the top performers in your company may be very difficult. If there are no minimum standards, one person MAY look like they are contributing more than others - but are they even meeting the basic expectations of their position and/or job duties? Having standards alone won't necessarily help you or your company reach the next level, but it will keep sub-par performers from maintaining employment with you or your company.
So, if you don't have them...get them. Everyone should be on the same page with expectations. Attendance policies, production standards, etc. are what set the rules of the game. It's very easy to make the call when people do not meet the minimum expectations. The rules of the game do not and should not change with each player.
An employee at Blitz Inc comments on 'standards': "Back when we first got started, we sort-of just doing our best. Once we laid a firm foundation of standards, everyone (including the less-seasoned employees) seemed to rise to the occasion. We set an attendance/late policy that a couple of people tried to weasel around, but the management sent them home for the day. Needless to say, they were on time every day going forward." Standards: A Blitz Inc Review
Expectations and standards can either motivate or demotivate a workforce pretty quickly. If you don't have them, you will demotivate. If you have them, you will motivate. If people don't know where they stand, the rules of the game aren't clear, and good employees won't know how to excel. After you have set the expectations and standards, you can then focus on promoting the right people to the right seats in your company. If you try to do so without having the set standards and expectations, it may create some anymosity between employees. You may even see an increase in employee performance like we have.
